HOME SAFETY

         General Tips

  • Wipe up spills right away
  • Remove scatter rugs
  • Reduce the amount of falling hazard
  • Keep loose objects off the floor
  • Keep a fire extinguisher and smoke detector on each floor
  • Do not smoke in bed
  • Remove electrical and telephone cords away from traffic areas
  • Light hard to see areas
  • Check and change smoke detector batteries once a year

 

       Bathroom Safety

  • Leave a night light on at night in the bathroom
  • Install grab bars
  • Use a bathtub chair
  • Use a raised toilet seat
  • Install a long shower head
  • Use a non slip tub mat
  • Prevent scalds by marking cold and hot faucets clearly

 

     Kitchen Safety

  • Check expiration dates regularly on foods
  • Use a kettle with automatic shut off
  • Use a timer to remind you that you are cooking
  • Do not wear loose fitting clothes when cooking. Loose clothing can catch a fire
  • When cooking turn pot handles away from other burners and from the edge of the range
  • Turn the exhaust fan on when cooking
  • Unplug small appliances  when not in use
  • Keep all knives in a drawer

 

      Medication Safety

  • Review medications frequently with your doctor
  • Dispose of old medicine
  • Keep a current list of all prescription and non prescription medicine
  • Do not share prescription medication and do not take another persons prescription
  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist first before mixing non Prescription with prescription drugs
